Skin Care Guide

Skin Care Guide

This guide can help you with daily skin maintenance and professional skin care.

If you are 20+

Your skin will generally require little maintenance.  It is at its peak vitality with good texture, and with minimal acne breakouts.  Your skin type is usually combination or oily.

Skin Care
Protect with a sun block of 30+SPF either in your makeup, moisturizer or an added step daily.
Am and PM use a gentle cleanser, toner and light moisturizer (containing antioxidants) that is appropriate for your skin type. See an Aesthetician to determine your exact skin type. For any acne breakouts, consult your aesthetician for the proper products for your particular skin, to avoid future damage created by using the wrong products or strength product for your skin.

Prevention
It is time to think ahead. The best way to keep your skin beautiful is to prevent free radical damage and premature aging. These occur, from exposure to the sun/UV radiation, air pollution, smoking, alcohol, inflammation, and poor nutrition. There is no cure for wrinkles so work on preventing them now. If you don’t you will be wishing you had as you get older.

Nutrition

Omega-3’s, found in flax, walnuts, and wild salmon help to keep skin clear by balancing oil production. Vitamins A & B6 are also important. Avoid foods containing hormones (meats & dairy products), as hormones can make acne worse.

Recommendations
Professional facial for keeping skin deeply clean. every 2-3 months , unless you have acne or blackheads, then you would need more frequent deep cleanings every month. If you want that tan look, use a mineral bronzer over your makeup or chose a shade darker than your usual and highlight with bronzer. Don't ever let you face be naked when outside!

If you are 30+

Your Skin
Your skin may be starting to look dull and uneven as your dead skin cells start to turn over slower than when you were in your 20’s. You may notice brown splotches due to hormone fluctuations from pregnancy, birth control pills or sun damage. You may also experience acne breakouts due to stress.

Skin Care
Use sunscreen daily spf 30+ everyday all year long. Cleanse, tone & moisturize in the AM & PM. To improve your skin tone by speeding the dead skin turnover, use a gentle exfoliant with alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) such as The Whole Body Naturals Purifying Exfoliant. You can get these ingredients in your basic products. Monthly professional peels are recommended with appropriate in home weekly treatments recommended by your Aesthetician. To thicken and strengthen your skin try a product with retinal palmitate vitamin A derivative (a collagen booster), and rosemary extract to aid the building of the skins upper layer such as The Whole Body Naturals Anti-Aging Multi Tea Cleanser.

If you are 50+
Free radicals and environmental elements are officially taking a toll on the skin’s ability to repair. Expression lines are more defined, elastin and collagen production have significantly declined, hyperpigmentation and sunspots may be more visible, and acne may still be a factor due to hormones.

In the treatment room. Your will do an analysis to design highly customized treatments to meet your specific needs. Strictly focusing on addressing the visual signs of aging, however, a treatment might include a pumpkin-peel for vitamin A and beta carotene support, followed by a skin-brightening producs that  to lighten and deepen the cleanse. Finish with a potent dose of amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins and SPF. Peels and microcurrent treatments also may be effective.

Home care. To specifically address aging, focus on cleansing, breaking down, rebuilding and protecting the skin. Your aesthetician can recommend the specific products that are best for your skin.

Lifestyle habits

Along with customized treatment and home care, lifestyle habits are very important to look your best. Proper sleep, stress control and a healthy diet will play a significant role in collagen production. Diets high in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants will help reduce inflammation (which impacts collagen production) and fight free radicals. Antioxidants are vital in minimizing the signs of aging, internally and externally. Getting these nutrients naturally from foods is always the best option, but supplements and topicals applied to the skin also provide benefits. Here is a sample list of foods that provide the antioxidants that you need.

  • Vitamin A: Carrots, kale, spinach, pumpkin, liver and cantaloupe
  • Vitamin C: Camu camu, broccoli, brussels sprouts, guava and citrus
  • Vitamin E: Olive oil, walnut oil, wheat germ oil, oats, tomatoes and carrots
  • Bioflavonoids: Citrus, berries, onions, tea, red wine, dark chocolate and sea buckthorn
  • Polyphenols: Berries, tea, dark chocolate, walnuts, peanuts and pomegranates

On the right track

For overall healthy aging throughout all age groups, it’s all about balance. Balance in living a healthy lifestyle; balance in properly cleansing and exfoliating to get the most out of serums and anti-aging topicals; balance in rebuilding the skin after more intense exfoliating or peel treatments, and being cautious not to over exfoliate or over-peel the skin. Protecting the skin from environmental stressors with a quality SPF is absolutely vital to maintaining a youthful appearance. Bottom line: While there is not a one-size-fits-all solution, skin assessments and customized care—in the treatment room and at home—focused on cleansing, rebuilding, nourishing and protecting, will ensure that you are on the right track toward healthy, youthful skin.
